The castle and grounds of Camelot in legendary old England. This costume outline makes provision for every possible
costume change indicated in the script, but indicated logical doubling up for conservation of funds. You may select
only those costumes you feel you need, request additional changes or suggest completely different ensembles. Actor size and inventory fluctuation may cause us to vary slightly from the descriptions below.
King Arthur
- Thigh length tunic, tights, long enveloping hooded cape, hat (of subdued colors,
masculine and utilitarian in appearance) Suitable for Act I, Scene 1 meeting
Guenevere, and Act II, Scene 4 – hunting in the woods - A quietly elegant tunic and tights for indoor wear (Suitable for I, 3, and II, 1)
- A change of the above (Suitable for I, 6, and II, 2)
- A “chain mail” tunic and leggings, over tunic of jazerant armour, helmet,
gauntlets, simple cape. (Suitable for I, 4 encountering Lancelot, and II, 8 – the
battlefield) - A colorful and elaborate tunic, tights, crown. (Suitable for I, 8 – the jousts, and II,
7-waiting for Guenevere to burn)
An elaborate and jeweled tunic, ceremonial cape, crown, tights (Suitable for I, II
and the knighting ceremony)
Guenevere: - An elegant “bridal” dress plus warm fur trimmed hooded winter cape (Suitable for
Act I, Scene 1) - An indoor dress plus simpler cape (Dress suitable for I-3. With cape may be used
for II, 1 going to the cattle show; II, 8 – the battlefield - A light flowing dress and floral wreath for hair (I, 5 Maying)
- A change of indoor dress (Suitable for I, 6 and II, 2)
- A colorful and elegant dress, crown (Suitable for I, 8 – the jousts)
- An elaborate and jeweled dress, ceremonial cape, crown (I, II knighting
ceremony) - A pale colored loosely flowing night shift (II, 6)

Lancelot Du Lac:
- A “chain mail” tunic and leggings, dressy tabard, cape.
(Suitable for Act I, 4 “C’est Moi”) - An indoor tunic and tights – quietly elegant (I, 6 and II<1)
- A very simple utilitarian tunic and tights (I, 9 immediately after the jousting II, 5 –
the bedchamber confrontation) - Same items as Arthur’s 4th listed costume (I, 7 – the jousts, II, 8 – the battlefield)
- Magnificent tunic, ceremonial cape, tights. (I, II – knighting ceremony)
King Pellinore - Gothic armour, but bent and rusty with pieces missing here and there. Plus “mail”
tunic, leggings, old cape. (Suitable for Act I, Scene 5 interrupting Maying; II, 3 –
the battlefield) - A knee-length looser tunic, tights, somewhat seedy (Indoor scenes, I, 6 and I, 9
and II,1) - A utilitarian tunic, tights, hat, cape (II, 2 – indoor scene; II, 4 – hunting)
The Challenger Knights: Leonel, Sagamore, Dinadani: - (Each) Tunic, tights, hat, winter cape (I, 1 – meeting the Queen)

Morgan Le Fey: - A wispy clingy low-necked dress trimmed with magic – usually in reds, plus
headdress. She is half sorceress, half temptress
Merlyn : - A Grey wispy magical robe with hood (I, 1)
Nimue: (Needed only if character is seen): - A flowing wispy magical thigh-length dress, tights, headdress usually in blues
and greens (I, 2)

battlefield)
Dap: Squire to Lancelot - Tunic , tights, cape, cap (I, 4)
Chorus: (Including Clarius, Lady Sybil, Lady Anne, Colgrevance, Bliant, Guilliam and
Castor): - (Each) Basic period garb plus winter capes (I, 1 meeting the Queen)

- (Each) Colorful part colored garb for the jousts (I, 8 – This change is the most
fanciful of the choices, having bright, light colors. It is the least “realistic” of the

The period of costuming used for the play is roughly 1200, with some excursions here
and there into pure myth. Jazzerant armour is the transition between plain mail and full
armour. It is the overlapping platelets of thick leather or thin metal – usually worn over
chain mail.
